At HEI Consulting, we know that a well informed client is generally a satisfied client. A good client understanding of the issues often helps to get the job done right the very first time, without cost overruns! The cornerstone of a web site's design, philosophy and approach is its roots, or sometimes, a lack thereof — but the site must be an effective marketing tool.
A totally the new site is the most complicated to do well and to do effectively. A web site can be compared to a book, with virtual chapters addressing different topics. Menu structures lead users of your site to different sections, perhaps representing different organizational, product or conceptual subdivisions. And with a new site, the whole should appear on the internet at once, as a complete functioning entity. A new site sometimes is implemented in parallel with the announcement of a new organization, adding the need for decisions regarding the presentation of the product, concept or service, color schemes, logos, incorporation of market- and business-plan aspects, and budgetary considerations.
Existing sites often need to be upgraded when they become a bit tired looking, in response to a competitor, or when an organization's corporate focus, products or services change; over night or over time. Sometimes the face-lift will include new logos, color schemes or a different target audience. And for most organizations, it's important that previous search engine results don't take clients to dead pages — dead pages are lost opportunities — a phased transition plan is therefore generally prudent. Existing sites can also be enlarged to represent significantly new opportunities, products or information. This type of change can be done seamlessly so as not to negatively affect search engine rankings, or your existing customer- or client-base.
Web sites can also be spawned as a result of a merger, acquisition, agency or partnership. These times are especially critical for a business or an organization — one's competitors are always looking for an opportunity to gain market share, and a carelessly planned wed site transition can give them the advantage they need.
To emphasize, your web site is an important part of your marketing plan, but not the only part! Your organization is seeking new sales opportunities, partners, venture capital, investors, customers, means of reducing expenses or anything else! A web site provides synergy with that full-page ad in the paper or a slick magazine — the web site though is a constant presence, available to your customers any time.
