Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service or MMDS has been dubbed "wireless cable TV". It provides digital video- and Internet- (including VoIP) access using various over-the-air microwave frequencies. Services are provided within a terrain-dependant line-of-site area, up to about 20 miles or 32 km from the transmit site. MMDS is especially suitable when services similar to those provided by a modern digital CATV system are needed in areas without any existing infrastructure.
Wireless cable systems can be implemented inexpensively. The capital cost for a single system may be as little as $US 1.0 to $US 1.5 million dollars with additional hubs costing about $US 300,000.00 to $US 500,000.00 each. Subscriber equipment typically costs between $US 250.00 to $US 500.00. Total installed costs are influenced by the country, the existing infrastructure and services to be provided.
Depending upon the country or region, MMDS is known by a variety of names (sometimes with slightly different technical specifications) including:
- LMCS: Local Multipoint Communications System
- LMDS: Local Multipoint Distribution System
- MCS: Multipoint Communications System
- MMDS: Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System
- MVDS: Multichannel Video Distribution System
- MWS: Multimedia Wireless System

MMDS is part of the family of direct-to-home broadcasting technologies. Like DBS, the customer receives an encrypted signal with a small antenna and IRD (set-top box). However, unlike DBS, full duplex (bi-directional) digital services can be easily and inexpensively accommodated for Internet and VoIP services.
HEI consultants can help your organization get started in MMDS, including planning, licensing, design and setting up the head-ends, the distribution infrastructure across a region or country, administration and other systems. As well, we will oversee installation and even train your staff.
